Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind è il coaster targato Marvel in costruzione ad EPCOT, precisamente nell’area del parco che si chiamava Future World fino a qualche settimana fa, ed ora si chiama ufficialmente World Discovery.
Guardians è stato annunciato alla mega conferenza Disney, D23 nel 2017 ma per vari motivi Disney ha mancato la sua apertura per il 50esimo di Walt Disney World, posticipandola all'estate del 2022, in tempo per il 40esimo compleanno di EPCOT.
Il progetto, oltre ai ritardi di costruzione veri e propri a cui è andato incontro a causa COVID, ha anche un problema legato a delle scene per pre-show e per il coaster stesso, che dovrebbero essere filmate con il cast di Guardians al completo. Le produzioni di immagini promozionali, così come scene per le attrazioni, di solito avvengono in contemporanea con le riprese di un film: in questo caso sarebbe stato Guardians 3, ma anche questo ha subito ritardi importanti. Il risultato finale è un coaster potenzialmente completo ad EPCOT, ma senza i contenuti di storytelling necessari alla sua apertura.
Durante gli eventi per la stampa del 50esimo di Disney, alcuni degli imagineers che stanno lavorando a questo progetto hanno parlato dell’idea per questo coaster e della sua backstory:

L’avventura inizia con gli ospiti in visita ad un padiglione di EPCOT: Wonders of Xandar. In pratica, quello di Xandar è il primo padiglione “extra galattico” ed opera ad EPCOT come tutti gli altri: con lo scopo di promuovere la cultura, le tradizioni, la tecnologia presenti sul pianeta. Dunque gli ospiti sono invitati ad entrare nel padiglione e visitare il Galaxarium, una sorta di planetario intergalattico, in cui verranno illustrate la formazione delle galassie, la posizione di Xandar e così via. Insomma, la prima parte dell’esperienza è organizzata in maniera informativa: un chiaro omaggio alla missione originale di EPCOT. Le cose, però, non andranno come previsto: i Guardians interromperanno la visita e inviteranno gli ospiti ad accompagnarli in una missione attraverso la galassia. Non sappiamo ancora i particolari di questa missione, ma sappiamo che avrà a che fare, tra le altre cose, con viaggi temporali. Pare che saremo trasportati fino all’inizio dei tempi, al Bing Bang, punto in cui la galassia di Xandar è stata creata.
Questo è tutto ciò che sappiamo per quanto riguarda la backstory del coaster: nonostante io non sia una grande fan della marvel in generale, devo dire di essere molto molto incuriosita a proposito, e mi piace l’idea che la backstory sia perlomeno un tentativo di connessione con l’idea originale di EPCOT.

Il coaster - che si svilupperà interamente al chiuso, è stato annunciato come uno dei più lunghi al mondo (tra le attrazioni indoor), e sarà il primo tentativo da parte degli imagineers di combinare un’esperienza di dark ride con un coaster vero e proprio. Dalle immagini che abbiamo visto, sappiamo già che uno degli elementi di forza del coaster sará il controllo della direzione del veicolo: proprio come in alcuni dark ride, ad esempio la Haunted Mansion, l’attenzione dello spettatore sará indirizzata verso specifiche scene attorno a lui, però in questo caso alla velocitá di un coaster vero e proprio. Sappiamo anche che questo coaster non avrà inversioni o loop, poiché è stato già pubblicizzato come family-friendly e probabilmente non avrà nemmeno limiti di altezza molto rigidi. Sappiamo però che ci saranno momenti in cui il coaster andrà all’indietro - si chiama Cosmic Rewind mica per niente! Non mancheranno poi chiaramente lasers, schermi, luci e animatronics ma la cosa rivoluzionaria sarà comunque il tentativo di fusione tra dark ride e coaster che gli imagineers cercano di raggiungere proprio con Guardians.
Mi fermo qui per quanto riguarda Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind ma sicuramente da qui alla sua apertura il prossimo anno saranno rivelati ancora più dettagli, quindi occhio agli aggiornamenti di questo articolo!
